Sideritis Mountain Tea

Its scientific name is Sideritis spp.

Mountain tea belongs to the Lamiaceae family and the Sideritis genus, which includes about 150 species, which grow mainly in the Mediterranean countries (Greece, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Turkey). In our country it has been known since antiquity and is mentioned by Theophrastus (372-287 BC) and Dioskouridis (10th century AD). Today, 17 species grow naturally in Greece. Its scientific name is Sideritis spp or Dioscorides siderite.

It is said to derive its name from its ability to heal wounds from iron objects, or by others from the spearhead-like shape of its flower.

It is a perennial plant and its height varies from 10 cm to 50 cm. It has thin and round branches with fluff. Their leaves are also covered with fluff, and its length ranges from 1-6 cm, thick, slightly fleshy, long, elliptical. Its flowers form corymbs and their color is yellow-white. Sideritis is a tasty and aromatic herb.
